Khi ai đó “in a pickle,” điều đó có nghĩa là họ đang ở trong một tình huống phức tạp, đối mặt với một vấn đề hoặc tình thế tiến thoái lưỡng nan mà không có giải pháp đơn giản.
Cụm từ trên xuất phát từ từ tiếng Anh cổ “pikel”, dùng để chỉ nước sốt hoặc gia vị cay. Giống như dưa muối (pickle) được bảo quản trong lọ có hương vị đậm đà, “in a pickle” được ẩn dụ như việc ai đó đang bị mắc kẹt hoặc bế tắc trong hoàn cảnh đầy thử thách và khó khăn.
